COP 29 was as successful as one might have expected. The wealthy countries were not willing or able to give enough, and the poor countries were not willing or able to make do with what they were offered.
Everyone around me claims our condition is due to climate change. Poor countries want equity. Rich countries want to keep their luxuries despite the consequences to the environment. We speak of tons of carbon dioxide going into the atmosphere. We look at poor countries suffering insurrection, displacement and extreme poverty. Rich countries have mostly stable governments, security and excessive wealth. Wealthy corporations play their own part in the complexities of equity.
We all ask ourselves in the wake of COP 29, where do we go from here? That is the trillion-dollar question. Come January, we may have some answers to that question. We might also ask ourselves, what could I do as one heart and soul among the billions inhabiting our planet? We live in comfortable homes with vehicles we replace regularly and we recreate in places annually all over the world and we complain about climate change.
