In January 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump said he would push all members of NATO to spend far more money on defence.

Trump wants Canada to increase its NATO presence by Canada spending more money on military supplies. Trump has just signed a big deal for India to buy US military supplies to balance trade. Do you think all his rhetoric about trade imbalance and tariffs is so that we will purchase our armaments from the United States? That would take care of his imaginary trade deficit. Perhaps it’s really that simple, he wants to sell us guns and bombs. 2 per cent of Canada‘s GP gross domestic product would be $50 billion a year just about the amount that Canada is deficient using Trump economics.
