LETTER: Political solutions only make problems worse

I’m sure all your readers have heard the story of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing. But did you know that it is now the official position of both our elected provincial officials and all our men and women elected to municipal councils on the south Island and beyond?

Apparently, they held a joint meeting and put their heads together to solve our problems.

The left hand held the doctor shortages, school shortages, road shortages and now, most importantly, water shortages. But the right hand held the answers they so cleverly came up with after having a drink or two, perhaps, as they assured each other they deserved a toast. And maybe a pay raise to boot. The answer, most assuredly, would be to build more houses, condos, apartments, and yes of course, attract more people – that was the ticket.

Somehow our politicians think that more people using more and more services, turning on more taps, and putting more cars on the roads will magically solve the shortages for the people living here. This is what is called “group think.”

At the end of the meeting, our great leaders commended each other for their cleverness in solving such huge problems without upsetting one single developer.

But not once did they let the left hand meet the right hand. Nope, out of the question, not needed, nada, no how, no way.
