LETTER: Problem tenants cause home to be demolished

Former rental home turned into a vacant lot

The recent letter about unfair practices causing landlords to second guess their rental units made me think back many years ago when this had happened in another province to my neighbour.

The landlord started renting a fully furnished home after their family moved out to a new home.  The tenants were storing their garbage bags full of their household garbage in a small, open shed, without taking it to the lane on a pickup day. As the pile of garbage nearly reached the shed’s roof, the health inspector was called for the mice infestation. The landlord was ordered to clean it all up plus repair the foundation walls.

Naturally, the tenants had to move out and they moved, with all the furniture, too far out of town to make it possible to recover the monetary loss. The landlord had that house demolished and the last time I saw it, it was an unused, vacant lot. Rental problem solved.
