LETTER: Saanich can't afford to wait for new operations centre

Alternative approval process asks residents if they oppose the borrowing of $150 million for the project

A rendering of the proposed District of Saanich's operation centre.

I support the $150 million Saanich Operations Centre and the district's use of the alternative approval process (AAP) to move this project forward.

Saanich’s decision to use the AAP is not only justified, it’s necessary. Holding a referendum would introduce costly delays and uncertainty, potentially pushing this essential project further into the future and driving costs even higher.

As Mayor Dean Murdock pointed out, “When this was identified as a priority almost 10 years ago … we probably could have replaced the building with half of today's costs.” Delays have already cost taxpayers, and continued inaction would only compound the problem.

The operations centre is critical to the maintenance and development of core municipal services. If we want Saanich to continue delivering effective, reliable service to residents, we can’t afford to wait any longer.
