LETTER: Saanich should find new life for library building and plantings

There's a distinct lack of public spaces in the area for Saanich residents to use

Saanich council has approved rezoning for the Nellie McClung Library site, paving the way for the building to be replaced with a structure that will be up to 18 storeys and include both a new library and over 200 affordable rental apartments.

With the upcoming "redevelopment" of the Nellie McClung Library site, my home branch, it will be a really sad shame that the beautiful plantings (and trees) that surround it are going to be lost.

Surely there's some way and someplace that they could be moved to and replanted?  Say the Gore Park at Shelbourne and Cedar Hill X Road, or Horner Park?

The same goes for the library building itself. There's a distinct lack of public spaces in the area for residents to use. Could parts (or all) of the building be moved to parks or facilities nearby for resident spaces, for meetings, groups, summer camps or anything that improves the community? It really is a lovely building on the inside, with high ceilings and exposed wooden beams.

Both Horner and Braefoot parks could use better/larger/improved spaces for residents.
