LETTER: Sidewalks and bike lanes needed in Sooke

Demamiel Creek footbridge project supports both Sooke's Parks and Trails Master Plan and Transportation Master Plan

The District of Sooke announced a multi-use trail and bridge for Little River Crossing Project.

Tenders for the Demamiel Creek Footbridge will soon close. At last estimate, the cost for the footbridge will top $3 million.

Recent media releases from Sooke outline how the Demamiel Creek footbridge project supports both our Parks and Trails Master Plan and our Transportation Master Plan. In fact, neither master plan includes the Demamiel Creek footbridge as a project to be prioritized or funded in the short, mid or long term. Both master plans do emphasize that sidewalks and bike lanes are needed to make active transportation in our town safe and accessible for everyone.

Why are we investing our infrastructure grants and tax dollars in an expensive project that is not supported by our guiding documents. The Demamiel Creek funds would be better spent on basic projects that support residents and businesses, like sidewalks and bike lanes.
