As a member of the Central Saanich Lawn Bowls Club, I am appealing to the residents or witnesses in the area of our club in Centennial Park for information on the individual or individuals who decided on two occasions earlier this month to do doughnuts with their vehicles on Hovey Road (recently chip sealed) in front of our lawn bowling property, spraying thousands of tiny rocks onto our greens.

The first incident was sometime between 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 and 6 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, and the second incident was sometime between 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9 and 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10. Members spent close to an hour after each incident cleaning the greens with a variety of tools and in some cases hand-picking the rocks as they were stuck to the grass with tar. If all these rocks are not removed from the greens it can have a significant impact on playing conditions and can do significant damage to the club’s equipment.

The club is a not-for-profit organization, and we provide an enjoyable and social environment for our 100 members, mostly seniors in our community. If we must spend extra dollars on maintenance costs due to incidents like these, we would have to raise our membership fees, thus making it difficult for some seniors to pay.
The club is celebrating our 40th anniversary this year, but no one feels like celebrating when they arrive at the club to bowl and find nothing but tiny rocks sprayed on the green. If you have any information about who is responsible, please call Central Saanich Police. If you are the one responsible for these incidents, please stop.
