According to earthday.org and many other science sites, world deforestation is a bigger source of climate change than vehicle emissions are, and Victoria’s way behind other cities, such as Vancouver and Toronto, in maintaining a healthy tree canopy.

As for the birch at Government and Humboldt, it obviously had value beyond the CO2 absorbing function: aesthetic, nostalgic and heritage values matter too.
