LETTER: Victoria tax dollars gone with the wind

Victoria councillors seeking options on supporting cinema in the city in wake of theatre's closure

Cineplex Odeon has called 780 Yates St. home since 1948.

Frankly, my dear Coun. Matt Dell, Dave Thomson, and Krista Loughton, I don’t give a damn if a couple movie houses close downtown.

Do councillors know there are still plenty of other options for moviegoers aside from the comfort of their own living room?

The IMAX in the Royal BC Museum screens major releases, and Silver City at Tilicum is the closest multiplex cinema. There’s also Cinecenta at the nearby University of Victoria and Vic Theatre at Blanshard and Douglas. So, there’s absolutely no need for council to dig into its seemingly endless taxpayer-funded toolkit to support the retention and establishment of movie theatres.

There are reasons some movie theatres are no longer financially viable, and if so, a business will buy the property. There are various other pressing needs for tax dollars. After all, residential taxpayers are still wondering if tomorrow is another day, given the recent 8.18 per cent property tax increase.
