I worked on the oil rigs for a while in northern B.C., Alberta and southern Saskatchewan, but in order for me to have even been considered for employment I had to have taken and completed a number of safety courses – first aid being one of those.
Young officers nowadays put a lot of time and money into being physically fit and well-educated and I find it hard to believe that basic first aid is not a prerequisite prior to enrolment into any police force. You need a driver’s licence to be a cop, so why not your first aid? This would prevent officers from being pulled off the streets to take the day course and cut the time down to only a few hours every couple years for the refresher courses.
