Four Victoria players are part of a rugby squad heading Florida.

The BC Bear U16 Girls Sevens squad for the Tropical 7s was announced March 22. Asia Olynyk, Leah Parsons, Chloe Whittaker and Hailey Carroll, from James Bay, will travel to Florida on Easter long weekend.

Darcy Patterson is coaching the team and be joined by athletic therapist Sheena Kelly.

The squad’s selection was based on performances from key events in the BC Rugby season, including the 2023 Kamloops 7s and 2024 Vancouver Sevens Invitational.

The Tropical Sevens is in Tampa Bay and will attract a variety of high school and university-aged teams to compete.

This year, the competition is open to teams of all skill levels for boys and girls in the age groups of U18, U16, U14, U12 and U23.

There will also be a senior men’s and women’s division for the first time in 2024.

The BC Bear U16 Girls squad also includes players from Comox, Cumberland, Duncan, Langley, Salmon Arm, Maple Ridge and Abbotsford.
