The host Zone Three (Fraser Valley) girls basketball team was making a strong push for the podium at the BC Summer Games.
Coach Colleen Folka was joined by Sarah Mauritzen in coaching two girls team from the light blue zone, and they were making the right adjustments from the standard five-person game, with their team starting a perfect 4-0.
"It's very fast and very different from what we're used to playing – it's great in developing their physical play," she said.
The games are 25 minutes, both teams shoot at the same basket, with quick transitions from offence to defence, and the shot clock allows for just 15 seconds of lining up a good look at the basket.
"Their decision making has to be so much quicker."
Despite the perfect record, Folka said her team was not having an easy time of it.
"It's been tight games, and it's been a challenge," said the Chilliwack coach.
If they get to the gold medal game, it will be played on Sunday at 10:35 a.m. at the Leisure Centre.
The 2024 BC Summer Games are being held between Wednesday and Sunday, July 17 to 21, in Maple Ridge. This is the third time in the Games history that Maple Ridge has been the host. This week, an estimated 2,400 athletes (average age is 14 to 15), plus some 500 coaches and officials are here for the competitions being held at sports venues throughout the community and region.
