As if Saturday’s AAA Islands weren’t electric enough, the Claremont Spartans and Oak Bay Bays meet again Monday night in a Saanich vs. Oak Bay senior boys basketball showdown.
Because of the amount of teams the Island fielded at the AAA level this year, only two berths are available at the AAA provincials.
Nanaimo’s Dover Bay took the first spot, stealing the Island championship from Claremont. The Spartans nearly won the Island final but had it stolen by Dover Bay in the last second, when Dolphin Jason McKie hit a three-point shot with 1.3 seconds remaining to give his team a 63-61 win. The lead changed hands often in the last quarter, with the Spartans leading by as much as five points.
Oak Bay did well to battle through the back door after an opening-game loss to Cowichan. The Bays beat Wellington of Nanaimo 66-37 in the third-place game.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Claremont secondary.
