Langford's horseshoe phenom and world champion Tom Moffat was recently honoured at the Greater Victoria Sports Awards as the Male Master Athlete of the Year.
This past summer, Moffat claimed the 65+ Elders A division at the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association World Tournament with 14 wins, 524 points and a ringer percentage of just over 78 per cent.
Outside of his major win on the International stage, Moffat won 23 out of 26 events that he competed in during his 2024 season.
While numbers would indicate Moffat was more than worthy of the award, he was humbled to find out he would be receiving the honour.
"This was truly an honour to receive," said Moffat. "Just to be nominated was special, but getting the award was just a whole other level."
Moffat, a 23-year veteran of the sport, first got into the sport at the Victoria Horseshoe Club.
The Victoria Horseshoe Club, founded in 1935 with a current membership of nearly 100 people, will be celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, which Moffat says is a huge milestone for all involved.
"The horseshoe club feels like a big family," said Moffat. "While we do compete against each other in smaller events and competitions, the camaraderie is what brings people back."
While Moffat plans on celebrating the award, he has several major tournaments lined up for the 2025 season including the world championships in Sandy, Utah, the Canadian Horseshoe Pitching Championships in St-Joseph-de-Sorel, Que., and the Hall of Fame Invitational in Wentzville, Mo.
While Moffat says that while he is excited about his upcoming events, they also carry a cost.
"These tournaments come with a large cost," said Moffat. "The support from the horseshoe community makes me feel quite special to say the least."
Moffat and the horseshoe club will be hosting a fundraiser on March 21 at 6 p.m., which is in the form of a mini corn hole tournament. The event will cost $15 and go towards supplementing the costs of Moffat's journey.
