The Elk Lake Triathlon won’t hit Saanich paths this summer – ending a 38-year streak – after organizers pulled the plug on the popular event, citing a sudden spike in traffic control costs.
Dynamic Race Events announced that the long-running triathlon, originally slated for Aug. 3, has been cancelled.
The decision came down to what organizers called an “unmanageable” $30,000 to $35,000 increase in required traffic control expenses, stemming from recent changes in enforcement by the District of Central Saanich.
“This wasn’t a decision we made lightly,” said race director Angie Woodhead in a statement. “But the financial burden created by the new traffic requirements left us with no viable path forward this year.”
The Elk Lake Triathlon has long been a summer fixture in Greater Victoria, drawing athletes of all levels to compete across four race divisions: Sprint Triathlon, Standard Triathlon, Aquabike, and Duathlon.
According to Dynamic Race Events, the District of Central Saanich recently implemented a policy requiring certified traffic control personnel at every intersection along the race route.
The move, the organizers said, was introduced without warning or consultation and added tens of thousands of dollars in costs just weeks before race day.
“With a community-focused event like ours, absorbing that kind of unexpected hit simply wasn’t possible,” said Woodhead. “We looked at every option – course changes, trimming costs, alternate configurations – but nothing could make it work in the short time we had.”
In a written response, the District of Central Saanich said its permitting process has not changed, but that the municipality is putting greater emphasis on enforcing existing requirements, particularly when it comes to road safety.
“Road races are complex and have significant impacts on traffic and public safety,” read the district’s statement. “This year, we’re being more diligent in requiring certified traffic control plans and early submission of permits so we can work with organizers to ensure a safe and successful event.”
In October 2024, a 41-year-old cyclist was killed after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Central Saanich Road and Tanner Road during the Tripleshot CrossFondo bike race. When asked if the decision to implement stricter measures was in response to the fatality, the district said it was driven by “several important safety and operational concerns.”
The district also pointed to the use of uncertified traffic marshals, stating that enforcement of certified Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) and qualified personnel is now a priority in alignment with the Motor Vehicle Act.
Despite their frustration, Dynamic Race Events made clear they remain committed to the triathlon’s future.
“The Elk Lake Triathlon has always been more than just a race. It's a tradition built on passion, community, and the joy of sport,” said Woodhead. “We’re not giving up. We’re determined to return stronger and more resilient.”
For now, athletes, volunteers, and spectators will have to sit this one out – but organizers hope the break is temporary.
“We share in your disappointment and are so sorry we let you down,” Woodhead said. “We’re already looking ahead to what comes next.”
