PHOTOS: Vancouver Island Dragon Boat Festival returns to Victoria

The two-day event welcomed participants from as far away as Edmonton and Oregon

The drumming and cries of dragon boaters echoed in Victoria’s Upper Harbour as the annual Vancouver Island Dragon Boating Festival took place on Sunday morning (Aug. 24).

Hosted by the Fairway Gorge Paddling Club, the weekend-long event welcomed hundreds of dragon boaters from Victoria and beyond, including participants from Edmonton and Oregon.

Held in Victoria’s Upper Harbour, north of the Point Ellice Bridge, the competition featured a variety of races, including relays, 500-meter, and 1,500-meter races.

A cheerful crowd gathered around the starting dock to encourage competitors as they set off and crossed the finish line.
