The Saanich Lacrosse Association is looking to make the sport more affordable and accessible for families with young children.
The association has opened registrations for its mini-tyke division, offering a discounted rate of $46 for five- and six-year-old players – the cost of insurance only – while waiving all other associated fees, said president Andy Stuart.
“COVID has been challenging for sports and our younger age groups didn’t sign up as much this past year,” he said. “We created this low-cost registration to encourage youth to come out and try lacrosse.”
The not-for-profit sports group aims to enable kids and families in all financial situations to participate.
Creating more accessibility to sport is important for the mental and physical health of kids who, more than ever, need an active outlet and form of socialization, Stuart said.
“We want parents and kids to try out the sport without the commitment – we just want them to be able to try it and see if they like it.”
