The Saanich Wolverines – a junior-bantam football team composed of 12- and 13-year-old boys – have been on a years-long winning streak, snagging their 50th consecutive victory on Nov. 10.
"This is a feat like no other in youth sports, or sports in general," Brian Coey, the president of Greater Victoria Minor Football Association, said in an email. “It is a testament to hard work, dedication, teamwork, a relentless pursuit of excellence and a group of extremely talented kids who love football."
The Vancouver Island Canadian Football Association team, which plays two seasons per year, suffered its last loss in 2022. Since then, it has snagged five Island championships and two provincial titles.
“The team has changed, as each year players age out and new players move up. Coaches move on and new ones join our ranks,” said Coey. “But one of the constants with the team has been the dedication of two coaches in particular, Karn and Arun Dodd ... who selflessly give back to their community in so many ways.”
On Nov. 23 and 24, the British Columbia Provincial Football Association finals tournament will be held at Langford's Starlight Stadium, where the Wolverines will fight for their third provincial title.
Arun said he was “superstitious” about breaking the team's streak and opted not to speak to Saanich News until after the championship game.
