The Nanaimo Golf Club's fairways will be filled with championship-level athletes this week.

The Golf Canada Senior Women's Championships will be held Aug. 26-28.

Nanaimo Golf Club's general manager Charles Stephen said the club is proud and honoured to host Canada's top senior women golfers and their families and fans.

“This premier event brings together elite competitors from across North America, showcasing both exceptional talent and the camaraderie that defines the sport," he said in a release. "Spectators will enjoy the opportunity to watch world-class golf up close while experiencing the club’s renowned hospitality and scenic beauty."

Nanoose Bay's Shelly Stouffer, who has won six straight B.C. women's senior championships, will be a local favourite, coming off winning the Irish Senior Women's Amateur Championship last month. Some of the other contenders include Judith Kyrinis of Thornhill, Ont., Mary Ann Hayward of St. Thomas, Ont., Hélène Chartrand of Salaberry de Valleyfield, Que., and Jackie Little of Procter, B.C. Sue Wooster of Phoenix, Australia, will also be teeing off.

“We are thrilled to welcome a strong field with several past champions…” said Madeline MacMillan, Golf Canada tournament director. “We’d like to sincerely thank the course staff and volunteers for their warm hospitality in the buildup to this national championship and we can’t wait to get action started this week.”

The 54-hole tournament will include not only the senior division, but also the super senior division, held concurrently. The national championship comes with many rewards, including an exemption into the 2026 U.S. Senior Women's Open and several other high-profile tournaments.

An inter-provincial team competition will be held over the first two days of the Nanaimo tourney this week, with Team B.C. looking to defend the Katherine Helleur Trophy.
