Sooke boys and girls teams earn trip Island basketball championships

Edward Milne Community School senior AAA boys and girls basketball teams qualified for the Island championships

Edward Milne Community School is proving to be a rising star in B.C.'s basketball world, as both its AAA senior boys and girls teams qualified for the Island championships.

The EMCS senior boys team led the city's AAA division this year, and clinched first place in the city playoffs, ending an 11-year drought since the school last achieved this impressive victory.

“We are incredibly proud of these young men for their dedication and commitment to the sport,” said Jason T. Pennock, a proud parent and fan.

“Their victory is not just a win for the team but for the entire Sooke community. They have given us all something to rally around, and we are excited to support them as they take on the next challenge at the Islands.”

The Wolverines will enter the tournament as the top seed in the south Island division and will kick off their Island championship bid with a game against Kwalikum Secondary School, who enter the tournament as the fourth seed in the northern division.

The senior boys AAA tournament will be held at Vic High Feb. 20-22. EMCS takes the court for their first game at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20.

Meanwhile, the EMCS AAA senior girls team is breaking barriers, becoming the first team in the school's history to make the Island championships. The girls tournament was held from Feb. 13-15. While the girls lost both their tournament games it signals a bright future for the program.

"Their dedication, teamwork and perseverance have propelled them to this significant milestone," said Christina Moog, Sooke's manager of communications and community relations.

She said the success of both teams is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the players, as well as the outstanding leadership of their coaches.

"The Wolverines’ success is a reflection of the strong athletic spirit at EMCS and the unwavering encouragement from local supporters. As they prepare for their next competition, the community is invited to continue showing their pride and cheering on these talented athletes," said Moog.
