Three Victoria rowers will help fly the Canadian flag this fall at the 2025 World Rowing Championships in Shanghai, China.

Caileigh Filmer, Alexis Cronk, and Sally Jones have all been named to the Senior Women's Squad, representing Canada from Sept. 21 to 28 at the Shanghai Water Sports Centre, where athletes from across the globe will compete in more than 20 events.

Filmer, 28, brings a wealth of international experience to the team.

A silver medalist in the Women’s Eight at the 2024 Paris Olympics and a bronze medallist in the Women’s Pair at the 2021 Games, she first picked up an oar with the Victoria City Rowing Club in 2010.

She now trains with the University of Victoria Rowing Club and has been a mainstay on the national team since 2013.

Cronk, 25, also rowed for the University of Victoria and has earned three World Cup medals, including two silvers and a bronze between 2022 and 2023.

Jones, the youngest of the trio, will make her senior team debut in Shanghai. A Victoria native now rowing for the Victoria City Rowing Club, she competed at the U23 World Championships in 2023.

The Women’s Eight team is coming off a strong season, with silver at the Paris Olympics and gold at the 2024 World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland. The national team currently includes 12 women.

“There’s been a great energy from all of the athletes being brought to the work, and to each challenge which has shown up in all areas of training and racing and shifted the program forward,” said national women’s lead coach Tom Morris. “The team that’s been selected has taken solid forward steps technically and physically to move towards achieving the objectives for this year and the cycle.”

Alongside the women’s team, the senior men’s and Para squads will also compete in Shanghai.

All crews will head to China in early September for training camp, with final boat entries confirmed before the competition begins.
