A trio of Vancouver Island hockey players will be representing Team B.C. at the WHL Cup and will be battling against provincial teams from across Western Canada.

On Sept. 7, B.C. Hockey announced the roster for the program of excellence’s male U16 Team B.C which will be competing in the tournament.

The final roster consists of 20 players, including defenceman Riley Steen of Ladysmith, who plays with the Okanagan Hockey Academy, defenceman Giorgos Pantelas from Victoria and forward Noah Kosick of North Saanich.

Schedule information for the tournament in Red Deer, Alta., hasn’t been finalized, but Team B.C. is anticipating putting a winning team on the ice at the event according to a B.C. Hockey press release.

“It was a difficult process getting the roster down to just 20 players since there is so much talent throughout B.C. and Yukon,” said Fred Zweep, commissioner of B.C. Hockey’s program of excellence, in the release. “We are excited to see this group of players compete in Red Deer at the WHL Cup and continue their hockey development.”

Team B.C. will be competing against teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and while battling for the top spot players will be looking to impress the many scouts expected to be in attendance.

The team will be led by head coach Jason Becker and assistant coaches Craig Bedard and Riley Emmerson.
