The VSS Panthers Jr. girls volleyball team went to the Island and won the annual VIU invitational tournament.

The Vernon Secondary School (VSS) Panthers junior girls volleyball team is firing on all cylinders.

The team competed at the Vancouver Island University invitational 32 team tournament, and came away with the gold.

"The girls played strong team volleyball," said head coach Mike Bertram. "The other teams just didn’t have our depth of hitters and ability to serve hard and flat."

After finishing pool play with a 3-0 record, the Panthers won the round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals each in a two-set sweep to set up a final against St. Thomas Aquinas out of Vancouver.

In the final, VSS's offensive firepower was too much to handle, as they won, 25-13, 25-19.

Leading the team throughout the seven-game tournament was Hayden Molitwenik, who had 31 kills, 17 aces and six blocks.

Lena Hoard chipped in with 33 kills, 14 aces and two blocks while Ember Brunwald had 18 kills, one ace and five blocks. Reagan Disher led the way in the serve department, with 24 aces.
