Oct. 18 is Persons Day in Canada.
This marks the anniversary of the day in 1929 when women were included in the legal definition of “persons.”
The case was a landmark in gender equality in Canada.
At the time, Lord Sankey, Lord Chancellor of Great Britain, announced the decision. “The exclusion of women from all public offices is a relic of days more barbarous than ours,” he said. “And to those who would ask why the word ‘person’ should include females, the obvious answer is, why should it not?”
Since the Persons Case in 1929, Canadian women have had significant achievements and accomplishments.
