QUIZ: In celebration of the freedom to read

Feb. 23 to March 1 is Freedom to Read Week in Canada

The week of Feb. 23 to March 1 is Freedom to Read Week in Canada.

The annual event was created in 1984 to think about the intellectual freedom we enjoy in this country, and to consider what that freedom means.

The need for this week continues as there have been numerous efforts over the years to have books pulled from schools and public library shelves, and there have been challenges with some of the books on the shelves.

Challenged works include books for children, adults and young adults, as well as magazines and comic books and graphic novels.

Over the years, challenged and censored works have included religious texts, books dealing with sexuality, scientific works, social issues and even Mickey Mouse comic books.

Some of the books that have been the subject of challenges may deal with uncomfortable subject matter or may promote platforms some oppose.

How much do you know about books, literacy and the freedom to read in Canada? Put your knowledge to the test with these 12 questions.

Good luck.
