After over two “unforgettable” decades serving fine foods to the community, Oak Bay’s Charelli's Cheese Shop and Delicatessen has announced it will be closing in May.
“Saying goodbye won’t be easy, but we’ll hold on to the love, the laughter, and the friendships we’ve built along the way,” said owner Carmen Lassooij in a social media post.
First opened in 2003, a cheesemongers and specialty food merchant located at 2851 Foul Bay Rd., Lassooij says Charelli’s has become “much more than a cheese shop,” building strong community connections through the years.
“From the very beginning, you have welcomed us into your lives,” wrote Lassooij. “We’ve watched families grow, shared in your celebrations, and been part of your everyday moments – helping you find the perfect cheese for a dinner party, the best picnic treats or just something special for yourself.
“We’ve laughed with you, cried with you, and cherished every visit, every story, every smile.”
“I am very unhappy, but love the Charelli’s experience. [It] will always be a cherished memory, I will never forget my sandwiches,” said one customer replying to the shop’s Facebook post.
“You have been a part of our family for Friday night shared plates, virtually every holiday, apres ski and many more moments,” wrote another. “The cheeses, the meats, the treats, the drink makings and especially the Charelli’s team will be deeply missed.”
“Thank you for all you have done, all the community you built, embraced and fostered, including your amazing generosity to the arts,” replied one Charelli’s fan.
The shop’s last day will be May 24, and customers have been encouraged to “visit, reminisce,” and enjoy their “favourite things while they last.”
“To our incredible customers and our amazing, amazing staff, past and present – Charelli’s wouldn’t have been Charelli’s without you,” says Lassooij.
The shop did not provide information online as to why they were closing.
