Nearing its 160th edition, the Saanich Fair draws in around 40,000-50,000 people annually, and this year those seeking local farm charm and midway thrills can enjoy even more from the largest agriculture event of its kind on Vancouver Island.
“If you’ve never been, you have been missing out,” said Kelly Kurta, executive director of the Greater Victoria Festival Society.
Located on the Saanich Fairgrounds, just minutes from Victoria, the Saanich Fair started in 1868 when farmers got together to show off their harvests. It’s since expanded into a Labour Day long weekend tradition that includes midway rides, agricultural competitions, more than 4,000 exhibits, vendors and animals on display. This year, the fair is growing even bigger with a midway expansion, a new kid’s zone, and for the first time ever, liquor on the premises.
In 2024, fair-goers can enjoy beer and cider at the Dogwood dining room, with access to a 60-seat outdoor patio and a roped-off grass area right across from the entertainment stage, said Amber Nelson, who works in administration for the North and South Saanich Agricultural Society. Foodies will also be delighted with additional food vendors and plenty of options to choose from.
It’s the first time alcohol is being served at the event in its 156-year history.
“This year, we’re doing it this way to get our feet wet. We may morph into something more of an actual beer garden. We just thought this was a good way to start,” Nelson said.
Another large fair attraction, the midway, is expanding by over 45,000 square feet for more rides (there will be dozens) and less lineups for the teens and thrill seekers. A sneak-peek midway will operate on the Friday (Aug. 30) before the fair opens, which won’t require an admission fee at the gate.

A unique feature of the fair is the competitions between community members in 4-H clubs – clubs that build youth leadership and community involvement with a basis around agriculture. Visitors will get the chance to see sheep shearing, art, sewing, baking, animal breeding competitions and more, showcasing some of the best that the farming community has to offer.
For the kids, a new kids zone on the grassy west field includes bouncy castles, ponies, face painters and more. The area is aimed at younger families so they can enjoy and relax.
“It seemed like a natural transition to try to make use of the space while creating a safer zone for the littlest guests as the midway can be overwhelming for parents with small kids,” Nelson said.
To accommodate the influx of people, the fair offers a bike valet service with safe, secure and free parking service.
The fair, at 1528 Stellys Cross Rd. in Saanichton, runs Aug. 31 to Sept. 2. Tickets cost $15 for adults 14 years and older, and $10 for seniors and youth 7 to 13 years. Tickets for the midway are separate. Visitors are recommended to purchase tickets online before they go as lines can get busy. Plan your visit at saanichfair.ca.
