Celebrate the ocean, learn about sealife at iconic Colwood lighthouse

Tide pools, killer whales and how otters help kelp are among the things residents can learn at the Fort Rodd Hill celebration for World Oceans Day on Saturday.

Parks Canada invites visitors to celebrate on June 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites in Colwood.

Regular admission fees apply – $9 for adults, $7.50 per senior and free for youth 17 and under.

The full day of drop-in fun for all ages connects visitors with local marine ecosystems with Parks Canada programs about biodiversity and conservation Super Sea Otters to the rescue, Forts for Fishes, Match the Patch; Look, Listen, Whale; or Wheely Important Ecosystems.

The event features several community booths including local organizations such as the Capital Regional District, Wild Wise Society, the Peninsula Streams Society, the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea and Ocean Wise.

A special under the sea photo booth and poster-making session and ice cream at the canteen are on tap. Ice cream is the locally made variety available from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
