Greek Fest brings the best of Greece to the doors of Saanich

From gyros and baklava to live music and dance, the annual celebration runs through Sept. 1

Greek Fest returned on Friday for its 24th year, kicking off a weekend of food, music, and culture in Saanich.

The admission-free festival runs from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 at the Greek Community Centre (4648 Elk Lake Drive) beside Commonwealth Place, daily from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Festival-goers can enjoy live performances from more than 20 dance and music groups, alongside traditional Greek dishes such as roasted lamb, souvlaki, spanakopita, baklava, and loukoumades.

For many, Greek Fest has become a summer staple.

“We have been coming to Greek Fest since we moved to the area,” said Sarah Carten. “It’s always something that we pencil in to the calendar, and make sure to celebrate.”

Carten said the event holds special memories for her family.

“Some of my fondest memories with my kids were here. They always used to go up front and dance in front of the stage. They’re too old for that now, they tell me, but I will always picture their little smiling faces dancing to the music," she said.

The food is another draw.

“The food is as good as it gets. We’re not Greek, but it has always been a food source that our family gathers around. My favourite is the gyros and spanakopita,” Carten said.

In addition to food and performances, the festival features the AGORA market, showcasing Greek arts, crafts, and take-home foods.

The nearby Greek Heritage Museum is also offering daily tours at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., guided by a local historian, with a maximum of 20 people per tour.
