A growing celebration of seeds returns to Victoria.
Dormant since the pandemic, the local Seedy Saturday is the second oldest in the world, originating in 1994.
This year’s event, held on a Sunday, encompasses a seed exchange, a marketplace for locally grown and climate-adapted seeds, and a venue for formal and informal learning about gardening, community food resilience, and food cultivation.
“Since 2001, when I started organizing the seed exchange at Victoria Seedy Saturday, I’ve noticed that every year more and more people are bringing in vegetable seeds to trade, as opposed to the ornamental plants that we used to see,” longtime volunteer Gillian Rowen said in a news release.

Brought back by a keen group of volunteers from the Victoria Urban Food Table, Victoria Seedy Sunday returns Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Quadra Village Community Centre and Neighborhood Gym, 901 and 950 Kings Rd.
For those unable to attend but willing to contribute saved seeds, drop-off locations are available at the Compost Education Centre at 1216 North Park St. Seeds can be dropped off from Wednesday through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Volunteers will then take care of repackaging them.
Entry to the event is by donation, boasting more than 40 local vendors offering free workshops and activities for children. Attendees are encouraged to partake in the popular seed exchange, exchanging their saved seeds with fellow gardeners.
