A summer 2022 phenomenon blending a banana and a duck returns to the forefront this weekend in Victoria.
That year, shoppers discovered a strange statue on shelves at London Drugs. The internet meme ducknana captured hearts and minds.
A three-year-old post from Reddit user fibre farmer likely describes it best: “There was a thing that was so ridiculous it shouldn't exist. And yet it did exist and someone posted a photo and it was funny.
“Then a couple of people bought the funny thing and posted funny pictures. This gave hundreds of people a laugh which spread the joy. Then fan art happened. Then people started complaining about the banana ducks and that made it even funnier because they reacted so strongly to what was just a stupid joke and two people spending their disposable income on something they liked. So more stupid jokes happened in response, and then it became this self-feeding monster that somehow outlived the usual timespan for what is otherwise a fun little meme. Apparently, there will be a picnic.”
It inspired social media and beyond that, real-world meetups, including a huge gathering in Beacon Hill Park, one that could be replicated this weekend.
A new ducknana meetup is set for Sunday, July 27 at 10 a.m. in near the stone bridge.
An organizer – under user name Geoff de Ruiter, the same as the 2022 event – took to social media Friday to spread the word of Sunday’s event, offering free ducknana stickers for attendees.
“Bring any duck-themed items you have. Family friendly and fun for all. So many stickers I need to offload,” they wrote.
Other inspired compilations – say turtlemelon, liorange or porcupinapple – are welcome. The Victoria News team particularly hopes to see skunkurian (stinky animal/fruit combo), tigermelon, or perhaps the rare gheese (cheese goose?).
As fibre farmer so eloquently said way back when: “Ducknana brought sunshine and joy to a place that is usually full of people complaining about things. For that I like it.
Although I am not going to spend money to actually buy one.”
