The Pop Art movement boasts some of the art world's most iconic figures, whose works are coming to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV) from Dec. 14 to April 27.
Organized and circulated by the Kelowna Art Gallery, From Warhol to Banksy features Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, Takashi Murakami, Banksy, and Mr. Brainwash.
What makes these artists "pop" is their style mixed with commentary on consumerism, social consciousness, and, more recently, activism. And, Pop Art is not just a phenomenon of the 1960s. It's evolved from Andy Warhol's infamous Marilyn Monroe screen prints (included in the exhibition) to Banksy's guerilla street art and the movement continues to critique and challenge our world today. This selection of prints, paintings, sculptures and ephemera will show audiences the blurred lines between high and low art while encouraging them to think about issues that persist in everyday life.
“Many of the works adopt a satirical, tongue-in-cheek look at the way consumerism has shaped our world. This is an exciting exhibition and an outstanding opportunity to see works by major international artists, on loan from a private collection, right here in Victoria,” said AGGV chief curator and director of exhibitions, Steven McNeil.
Captivating the public with her driftwood sculptures, Tanya Bub has a solo exhibit in the works to be held at the Gage Gallery Dec. 3 to 22. The theme? BIRDS!
"In BIRDS!, I want to demonstrate how ordinary materials can be transformed into something extraordinary," says Bub. "To remind visitors that creativity isn’t just for artists, and to encourage people to discover new possibilities in the things we see every day."
Featuring over 100 unique bird sculptures, BIRDS! draws inspiration from beloved local avian life. Bub uses innovative techniques to breathe life into everyday materials, crafting each sculpture with found objects like driftwood, chicken wire and paper.
"We are so blessed with the diversity and beauty of birds in our city. Many of us see herons, owls and hummingbirds almost on a daily basis,” Bub adds. "What better subject to inspire creativity and make us appreciate the glory that surrounds us."
Birds will fill every corner of the Gage Gallery at the free exhibit. The bird sculptures will be available for purchase in time to put under the Christmas tree with prices ranging from $30 to $3,000.
