Greater Victoria Terry Fox Ride raises over $7K for cancer research

Terry Fox’s brother participated in the ride

Approximately two dozen cyclists – including Darrell Fox, Terry Fox’s brother – took part in the second annual Greater Victoria Terry Fox Ride of Hope.

The ride, which took place on Sunday (June 25), raises money for the Terry Fox Foundation to help fund cancer research.

“It’s so exciting to be here representing the family and the Terry Fox Foundation,” Darrell said at the event. “We’re trying to find a cure for cancer, and we’re getting there. Outcomes have improved dramatically. We are winning.”

Over $7,000 was donated to the cause by Sunday afternoon, and the first ride raised $11,843.00 in 2022.

The fundraising goal is $14,300.00 in recognition of the 143 days Terry ran in 1980.

“This is so incredible,” Darrell said. “Terry didn’t expect that he would raise $24 million in 1980 and that they would find a cure right away. He knew it would take a lot of time and a lot of effort and that’s what we’re seeing today. This is a cool experience. We’re getting there one step at a time. “

The ride began at Trek Bikes on Catherine Street and featured 143- and 72-kilometre routes.

“It’s fantastic to have so many people participating, and we got perfect weather,” organizer Laura Ockenden said. “We would like to see it grow.”
