Rain or shine, scores of people are expected to descend on late winter invasive plant pulls across the region with the Greater Victoria Green Team.
With a couple under their belt for 2025, a host of invasives-clearing events are set for February and March in View Royal and at the University of Victoria.
The team first hits View Royal Feb. 22 removing invasive Scotch broom from Edwards Park in partnership with the Town of View Royal.
The next day they’re at UVic to clear invasive plants such as English ivy from the campus, near the entrance by Cedar Hill Cross Road.
The Greater Victoria Green Team is a regional environmental volunteer program and is part of the National Charity Green Teams of Canada. The team works with municipal and provincial parks, charities, nonprofits, business and societies “to tackle environmental issues through co-operation and teamwork.”
The events are billed as an opportunity to meet new people, learn about environmental issues and increase biodiversity.
Volunteers should expect to get dirty, and wear long sleeves and pants to protect from thorny plants and bugs. Bring a water bottle and wear sturdy closed-toe shoes as well as a hat and appropriate outerwear. The team provides gardening gloves, tools and safety glasses for folks who don’t have their own. Snacks are also provided. Registration is required.
