With a touch of magic, celebrating graduation can be both budget-friendly and eco-conscious in Greater Victoria thanks to the help of one Saanich woman.
Elizabeth Surerus founded the Magic Wand Project in 2001, starting from her home and moving several times before settling in a Saanich residence to serve the 2022 graduating class.
The nonprofit allows students to rent dresses, tuxedos, suits, and accessories for a small fee.
Open to all youth in Greater Victoria, the initiative spreads the word through local schools, reaching as far north as Mill Bay.
What started small has grown into a community-driven organization that has helped over 2000 students attend their ceremonies at an affordable price.
Currently housed in a Gordon Head home, the Magic Wand Project boasts a collection of more than 100 dresses in various sizes and styles, along with 40 to 50 tuxedos, suits, and accessories to complete any look.
Surerus welcomes emails from those interested in donating garments—though space is limited, and she prioritizes items that fill gaps in size or style.
"We believe every student should celebrate their achievements in style, regardless of their financial situation," says Surerus. "Our mission is to bridge the gap between affordability and style, ensuring that all students can attend their graduation ceremonies with confidence and pride."
