Shoppers descend on Oak Bay’s Garagellenium

Community-wide garage sale returns for first time since 2019

Oak Bay’s Garagellenium was back with a bang on Saturday (July 22).

Last held in 2019 and pushed from its usual June dates, the community-wide garage sale was met with sunny skies and scores of shoppers.

This is Hugh Aitken’s third year having a sale as part of the event. “It’s a good way to get rid of things,” he chuckled. “The whole thing just works.”

He’s noticed hardcore bargain hunters are very self-motivated.

“The collectors come early and I always ask them if they’re looking for something in particular. So they ask for gold, jewelry, watches, cameras. They’re usually there before nine … people who know what they want to get.”

Even as the crowds shrunk slightly throughout the day, Raulph Schoeddert was still out along Beach Drive on Saturday afternoon, waving passersby down and encouraging them towards his sale.

“It gives people a laugh, and it works. People have been coming down,” quipped the mustachioed, balloon-toting Oak Bay resident.

Sales were dotted on streets throughout the community, with a variety of wares on offer, with some raising money for charities like the SPCA.
