Speculations on social media about the permanent closure and bankruptcy of Sonora Bar and Grill are not entirely true.

On June 3, a Reddit post in r/VictoriaBC stated that it appeared that Sonora Bar and Grill had closed down after a five-year run with a rumour that it was due to bankruptcy.

While the Google listing for the locally-owned Mexican restaurant and bar states that Sonora is permanently closed, the owner, Joe Aguilar, clarified to Black Press Media that while temporarily closed, the business is set to reopen under a new name.

In a Victoria Hospitality Industry Facebook group post by Black Press inquiring about the restaurant, Aguilar stated that the rumours of bankruptcy in the Reddit post are false.

“Thanks for your concern but no worries all good, it was just time for a good change. Great things coming soon!!!!!! haha and no bankruptcy.”

Later, Aguilar spoke in a private Facebook message with Black Press.

“Just confirming that there is no such bankruptcy. I have a perfect relation with my former employees and no debts with my suppliers.”

The restaurant is currently under renovations and will reopen as Medusas under a change of management and will not keep its Mexican ties, Aguilar added.

Black Press has asked Aguilar if he knows a rough timeline of when it will open again and whether it will remain a restaurant but did not have a reply at the time of publication.
