VIDEO: Singing songs of love keeps music playing in Oak Bay school

High school choral singers perform songs for pay with annual Love-a-grams

Imagine opening the door to a group of savvy teens singing a song of love.

Luanne Chew can picture it from memory. As a parent of Oak Bay High choir students, she’s seen the annual love-a-gram program from both sides.

“It’s like a little private concert … It was very fun being on the receiving end of that,” Chew said.

Each year, the choral groups divvy up to serenade loved ones while delivering a rose, chocolates and a card with a personal message for a small fee, raising funds for the varied and award-winning choral programs at Oak Bay High.

Chew’s kids raised cash to sing in Europe and Disneyland, but they derived other benefits as well.

“It was good practice for them to show up at someone’s door and introduce themselves,” she said. “It benefits the students but in a way, it benefits the community as well to have something like that they can participate in.”

An Oak Bay High choir program Love-a-gram is $40 and available Feb. 14 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

They can be ordered online at https://sd61.schoolcashonline.com/Fee/Details/52465/140/False/True or email oakbayhighchoir@gmail.com.
