8-time Grammy nominee Tierney Sutton to play at the Dave Dunnet June 28

Tierney Sutton Band plays hits from The Sting Variations

Following the release of its 2016 album The Sting Variations, the Tierney Sutton Band will make a stop in Oak Bay this month for JazzFest. 8-time Grammy nominee Tierney Sutton, pianist Christian Jacob, drummer Ray Brinker and bassists Kavin Axt and Trey Henry formed as a band in 1993 and have remained together since.

This makes the band a 24-year cooperative anomaly in the music scene - especially since the members manage themselves in all departments, be it sales, management or finances. Known for its synergistic performances, The Tierney Sutton Band relies as much on each instrument as it does on famed Tierney Sutton’s vocals. The artist derives her vocal inspiration from jazz instrumentalists such as Hubert Laws rather than jazz singers, a unique style which allows her to blend with the band.

Sutton says that the musicians she has worked with have made her career. “Being able to work with the great community and with my band is a dream of mine.” She collaborated with renowned lyric soprano Natalie Dessay on the album Pictures of America last year, as well as on 2017’s show, Between Yesterday and Tomorrow, composed by Michel Legrand and performed by Dessay. These collaborations come among many others in Sutton’s long and diverse career.

With her band, Sutton has had the chance to tour the world and record two albums, along with the soundtrack for Clint Eastwood’s 2016 feature film Sully, starring Tom Hanks.

Tickets are on sale for the show at the Dave Dunnet theatre. Bring an extra cheer and warm welcome to Tierney Sutton on her birthday, June 28.
