Canada Day celebrations will be taking place July 1 at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites.

This Canada Day, trade the backyard barbecue for cannons, ice cream and coastal charm in Colwood, for a celebration where the past meets the present.

Hosted by Parks Canada, the community is invited to Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites on Tuesday, July 1, for a day of family-friendly fun, history and celebration – set to the sound of live music and the backdrop of a lighthouse that’s stood watch for 164 years.

Heritage and nature-based programs, plus interactive community booths, will give visitors the opportunity to discover, learn and play; while those who enjoy pomp and ceremony can enjoy live music from the Band of the 5th (BC) Field Artillery Regiment.

History buffs will be able to get up close with military displays, historic weapon demonstrations and meet members of the 5th (BC) Field Artillery Regiment, who will also conduct a 21-gun salute at noon.

"National historic sites illustrate the defining moments in the story of Canada," said Parks Canada in a news release. "Together, they tell the stories of who we are and connect us to our past, enriching our understanding of ourselves, each other, and Canada as we move forward together."

If the weather gets too hot (or not), folks can cool off with specially crafted ice cream and sodas, plus feast on food prepared by the Ladies Auxiliary, who will be working the grill.

Admission is free and the event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

From the Colwood Western Exchange Park & Ride, a shuttle service will run to and from the historic site from 10:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Live music by The Band of 5th (B.C.) Field Regiment of RCA will start at 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., and from 12:05 p.m., after the 21-gun salute, to 12:45 p.m.

The Soul Shakers will perform at Belmont Battery from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

And most important of all, don't forget to mark the day with your annual family picture by Canada’s giant flag at Fisgard Lighthouse.
