If one were lucky enough to have seen Snotty Nose Rez Kids when they performed at Phillip’s Backyard this summer, they’d remember one of the most energetic shows of the festival with a roaring crowd and a mosh pit – not always a common occurrence at a rap show.
The dynamic duo, who are the leading Indigenous voices in First Nations hip-hop with hard-hitting lyrics, are coming back to the city just as hard, if not harder. The group has just announced the launch of their major label debut alongside some further great news for Victoria fans: they’ve added two Victoria dates at Capital Ballroom to their 2024 North American Hot Planet Tour, returning to the venue where they sold out in March 2022.
Their new single “I Got Paid Today”, featuring vocal cameos from Tia Wood and Lex Leosis, showcases their lyrical skills and storytelling abilities. It’s a glimpse into what’s to come next summer when their forthcoming album is due for release. Fans likely have high hopes for the upcoming album, as the band’s previous 2017 album The Average Savage was shortlisted for the 2018 Polaris Music Prize, and for the 2019 Juno Award for Indigenous Music Album of the Year.
One half of the Haisla duo, Quinto “Yung Trybez” Nyce, said in a press release the newly released single is a “raw and rhythmic anthem with an electrifying beat” handled by Boogey The Beat (A Tribe Called Red/The Halluci Nation).
“The track paints a vivid picture with its lyrics and plays on the tropes of shopping as a therapeutic act with a catchy hook inspired by the iconic Mean Girls moment: ”Get in loser…we’re going shopping,’” said Yung Trybez.
The track is available for listening on Spotify, YouTube and Apple Music.
Snotty Nose Rez Kids will perform Feb. 16 and 17, 2024 at Capital Ballroom. Tickets are available at thecapitalballroom.com.
