Get ready for a nostalgic trip back to the '80s as Saanichton Village Association (SVA) presents its annual free outdoor movie night, featuring the timeless classic, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.
The beloved community event returns to the Saanich Fairgrounds on Saturday, Aug. 16, immediately following the Peninsula Country Market.
"This is the SVA's sixth year of hosting outdoor movies," shared an enthusiastic Kristy-Lynn Johnson, secretary of the SVA. "For the past three years, we've partnered with Fresh Air Cinema to bring these events to life. Last year, we screened Back to the Future, and a lightning storm rolled in that same night, adding an extra layer of excitement."
The SVA gathered movie suggestions from the community throughout the past year, collecting ballots at various events.
"We compiled a list of movies and then opened it up to a social media poll," Johnson explained. "E.T. overwhelmingly won, followed by Dirty Dancing and Deadpool."
The 1982 cinematic gem, starring Henry Thomas as Elliott and Drew Barrymore as Gertie, will begin at 9 p.m. on a massive 40-square-foot screen.

Doors open at 6 p.m., offering a pre-show filled with family-friendly entertainment, including live music from Victoria-based band Fine Spirits.
"We strive to provide entertainment for the entire family early in the evening, understanding that not all children will stay for the late-night movie," Johnson noted. "We aim to have family-friendly options available from 6 to 9 p.m."
Attendees can also indulge in a variety of delicious food options, including Peninsula Pizza, Greek on the Street, Berry Sweet, Bretzels, Noel's mini-donuts and an ice cream truck.
Capital Bike will be on hand to host a bicycle obstacle course and bike decorating station, encouraging attendees to embrace the E.T. theme.
The Central Saanich Fire Department FireSmart group will also be offering engaging FireSmart activities for kids.
The SVA will also be auctioning off Adirondack chairs.
Adding to the extraterrestrial atmosphere, the Centre of the Universe historical observatory will be providing a special display.
With ample parking, including accessible options, families are encouraged to bring their blankets and chairs to enjoy a magical evening under the stars with their community.
