Black Press’ Greater Victoria journalists, newspapers up for 15 B.C. awards

The finalists are among dozens of other Black Press nominees throughout the province

Greater Victoria and South Island newspapers are up for 15 awards at the upcoming B.C. and Yukon news media awards.

The B.C. and Yukon Community News Media Association announced the finalists for the 2024 awards on March 22, and several of Black Press’s Greater Victoria publications and journalists are up for Ma Murray awards.

Oak Bay News is a finalist for general excellence.

For the Ma Murray Community Service Award, Randi Page, Katherine Engqvist and Samantha Duerksen are nominated for the “Mental Health & Addiction Resource Guide” in the Victoria News.

Jake Romphf is a finalist for the Environmental Initiative Award for “Network of major Greater Victoria buildings charting the path to zero emissions” in the Victoria News.

Cathy Webster, Jocelyn Pereira and Joan Stiebel are up for the Reader Engagement Campaign Award for the Goldstream Gazette’s Orange Shirt Day.

For the Environmental Writing Award, Bailey Moreton is up for “Vancouver Island waters an ‘overflow industrial parking lot as freighter traffic skyrockets: MP” in the Goldstream Gazette.

Jocelyn Pereira is a finalist for the Spooktacular Sales Event in the Goldstream Gazette.

For the Photo Essay Award, Justin Samanski-Langille’s “Thousands celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day in Colwood” in the Goldstream Gazette.

Janet Gairdner, Susan Lundy, Lia Crowe and Maria Lobanova are finalists for the Magazine Excellence Award for Tweed Magazine in the Oak Bay News.

The Goldstream Gazette’s “2023 Truth and Reconciliation” is up for a Feature Series Award.

For Special Publications Award (circulation under 11,000), Rod Sluggett, Kevin Laird, Bev Petow and Tammy Robinson are finalists with Sooke News Mirror’s “Sooke to Port Renfrew Travel & Experience Guide.”

Janet Gairdner, Glen Butcher, Jason Ouellet and Maria Lobanova are finalists for Special Publications Award (circulation over 11,000) with “101 Things to Do: Fall & Winter 2023 Experience Guide” in the Saanich News.

Bev Petow is a finalist for Sooke News Mirror’s “Living A Healthy Life” the the Special Section Award (circulation under 11,000).

Janet Gairdner, Samantha Duerksen, Jason Ouellet and Lily Chan are finalists in the Special Section Award (circulation over 11,000) for “Saanich Foodie” in the Saanich News.

Christine van Reeuwyk is a finalist for the Feature Video Award for “Parents petition Saanich to avoid preventable tragedy at intersection” in the Saanich News.

Christine van Reeuwyk, Katherine Engqvist and Sonica Parmar are finalists for the Multimedia Breaking News Story for “52-year-old public works employee killed in Oak Bay crash” in the Oak Bay News.
