Tipping fees, fines for improper disposal of asbestos are set to rise at Hartland Landfill in Saanich.

Refuse tipping fees at Hartland Landfill and fines for failing to deal with asbestos appropriately are going up in the new year.

The Capital Regional District board approved changes to the bylaw during its Dec. 11 meeting.

The general trash tipping fee is set to rise $5 to $155 per tonne to keep pace with inflation and align with 2025 rates in other districts on Vancouver Island.

Controlled waste and asbestos fees will rise from $157 per tonne to $214 per tonne in response to the rising operation cost of responsibly managing the materials compared to general garbage. The goal of that increase is to signal to users the risk the materials pose to human and environmental health.

The fine for improper disposal of asbestos marks the most significant increase, jumping from $200 to $1,000 per infraction “to enhance bylaw officers’ enforcement tools,” the CRD said in a news release.
