The City of Victoria and the Victoria Book Prize Society announced the winners of the 2024 Victoria Book Prizes, recognizing local authors Kathryn Mockler and Raina Delisle for their “outstanding” literary work.
Kathryn Mockler received the City of Victoria Butler Book Prize for her fiction collection Anecdotes, while Raina Delisle was awarded the City of Victoria Children’s Book Prize for her non-fiction work Breaking News, Why Media Matters. Both authors were awarded $5,000.
Mayor Marianne Alto announced the winners at the Victoria Book Prizes Gala on Oct. 16, held at the Union Club of British Columbia.
“Their work not only enriches our city but also highlights the power of storytelling to inspire change,” said Alto.
Mockler, the author of five poetry books and a professor at the University of Victoria, was recognized for Anecdotes, a darkly humorous collection exploring themes such as sexual violence, abuse, and environmental collapse.
Delisle, an award-winning journalist, was honoured for Breaking News, a guide aimed at teaching young readers about media literacy, news consumption, and the role of the press in society.
The Victoria Book Prizes, established in 2004, celebrate excellence in fiction and children’s literature. The prizes are a partnership between the City of Victoria and Brian Butler of Butler Brothers Supplies.
