BC Ferries is warning holiday travellers to keep on their toes this week.
A travel advisory statement was issued by BC Ferries on Dec. 23, stating that due to expected high winds for the Strait of Georgia and Vancouver Island, service on multiple sailing routes may be affected in some fashion by an incoming storm on Dec. 25.
"The safety of our passengers and crew is of primary importance to us and we will continue to monitor this weather system and share information as it becomes available," BC Ferries stated.
Environment Canada is predicting a “powerful frontal system” to hit Vancouver Island and the South Coast on Christmas Day bringing high winds and heavy rain. A Weather alert was also issued for Greater Victoria, on Dec. 24 advising of a wind storm on Christmas Day.
"Very strong southeast winds at 70 gusting to 90 km/h, and 80 gusting to 100 km/h possible for Greater Victoria, Southern Gulf Islands and Courtenay to Campbell River," Environment Canada stated. Additionally stating other hazards may include travel disruptions, possible power outages and the possibility of winds "tossing loose objects and damaging outdoor holiday decorations."
Winds are expected to ease on Christmas night.
Following that a low-pressure system will approach the Island on Dec. 26. It is currently expected to pass through the Juan de Fuca Strait, with the strongest winds and heavy precipitation likely to be confined to the B.C. South Coast. However, BC Ferries has not issued a travel advisory for Boxing Day as of yet.
Christmas Day travellers should also keep in mind that BC Ferries customer service will be closed on the day, but open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.
Travellers can find more information on service notices at BC Ferries website.
