Opening in the fall, the new West Shore campus is set to be a hive of activity and learning.
For students in West Shore communities wanting to pursue a career in the growing areas of health care, education and technology, Camosun College has announced it will be making some of its most popular programs available in September at the new campus, located at the intersection of Peatt Road and Goldstream Avenue in Langford.
“We’re bringing in-demand programs closer to students living in the West Shore,” said Richard Stride, acting provost and vice-president of education and innovation, in a news release.
“Camosun’s goal has always been to make our programs and courses as accessible as possible so we’re very proud to make more programs available closer to home.”
Prospective students will be able to choose from Camosun’s Information and Computer Systems Technologist Diploma, Early Learning and Care Diploma and the Health Care Assistant Certificate program, which provides the knowledge and skills to work effectively as a front-line caregiver.
As well as Camosun, the one-stop campus will also house students from the University of Victoria, Justice Institute of BC, Royal Roads University and the Sooke School District.
The project had been scheduled for completion in fall 2024, but was pushed back a year due to construction issues.
The five-storey, zero-carbon, mass timber building will include flexible learning spaces and classrooms, student supports, an innovation studio and space for Indigenous gathering.
The name of the campus has yet to be announced, but following the death of former B.C premier John Horgan in November last year, a campaign was launched to have the building named the 'John Horgan University of Langford'.
"Without his support, we wouldn't have that university here," said former Langford mayor Stew Young in November. "It's going to be such a huge benefit to our community. I think that it would be an excellent legacy for a man that did so much for our community."
