Central Saanich police officer charged in collision with bicycle

A Central Saanich Police Service officer was charged with driving without due care and attention under the Motor Vehicle Act.

A member of the Central Saanich Police Service has been charged with a count of driving without due care and attention under the Motor Vehicle Act for an incident that occurred on May 21, 2024.

According to a news release, the charge against Cpl. Phillip DiBattista was sworn on Thursday, May 15, following an investigation by the provincial civilian oversight agency – the Independent Investigations Office (IIO).

A 2024 news release from the IIO said it was investigating a motor vehicle incident that took place around 8 p.m. on the same date in May 2024. 

"Information provided by the Central Saanich Police Service states the affected person was riding a bicycle along Wallace Drive, later determined to be in the 7100-block, when he was struck by a marked police vehicle," noted the release.

DiBattista's first court appearance is scheduled for June 11.
