PHOTOS: New Lower Mainalnd crosswalk to honour veterans and Canadian Armed Forces

Crosswalk features the emblem of a soldier alongside the words: Lest We Forget

A new commemorative crosswalk has been unveiled by the City of Maple Ridge in front of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 88 in Maple Ridge this weekend.

The red crosswalk, painted overnight on Friday, Aug. 29, features the emblem of a soldier alongside the words "Lest We Forget."

It is located at Brown Avenue and 224 Street, and is in honour of veterans and members of the Canadian Armed Forces, said Mayor Dan Ruimy.

“This crosswalk serves as a visible and daily reminder of the service and sacrifice of those who have defended our country,” said Ruimy.

“We committed to having it in place ahead of Remembrance Day this year, and by working closely with the legion, we’ve been able to deliver on that promise. By honouring our veterans in this meaningful way, we are expressing our gratitude and deep respect while strengthening the ties between our history, our community, and our future,” said the city's mayor.

An official unveiling ceremony took place on Saturday, Aug. 30, attended by Ruimy, city council, and legion executives.

The design was developed in close collaboration with the Maple Ridge legion and approved by the Royal Canadian Legion’s dominion executive council.

Legion representatives worked closely with the city to determine the location and finalize the design, ensuring the project reflected the shared values of remembrance and community pride.

“This initiative is a tribute to the men and women who have served Canada, and it’s deeply meaningful to see it located right outside our legion,” said Allan Casswell, president of the Maple Ridge legion.

“As we look ahead to Remembrance Day, this crosswalk stands as a powerful reminder of our collective promise to never forget,” he added.

The project was funded through the city’s operations budget and originated from discussions between Ruimy and the legion – as well as requests from community members.
